Liquid

The theme for this week’s photo challenge is ‘liquid’, which is timely for me, as we’ve just got back from a holiday in St Monans, on the East Neuk of Fife, Sctoland. It’s essentially a coastal area, and the landscapes are dominated by the sea. We were blessed with wonderfully warm and sunny weather, so … Continue reading Liquid

Beloved: snowdrops

One of my favourite sights at this time of year - a carpet of snowdrops. These were in the grounds of the National Trust property Wallington Hall. ”Beloved” is the theme for the photo challenge this week, and you can find out which objects, views, and people are held dear by other bloggers over on … Continue reading Beloved: snowdrops

Hedgerow: variations on a theme

The hedgerows around the house have been given their annual haircut, and they are looking very straight and tidy. Although they still form a hedge, it’s possible to see the individual plants that combine to make the whole. The pattern repeats, yet each is unique. Variations on a theme. Find more infinite variety over on … Continue reading Hedgerow: variations on a theme

Silence

Walks in the countryside around our house are usually fairly quiet affairs. Once out of the village, I often don’t see a soul, unless you count the rooks and sheep. Other than the wind, they are often the only sound to be heard too. I went for a walk in the snow this afternoon, and … Continue reading Silence

Weathered: drinking trough

This old drinking trough looks like it has been here for some time, although I suspect that the bath and brick extension may be a more recent addition. Both parts are certainly weathered, which is handy, as that’s the prompt for this week’s photo challenge. Find more weathering over on the Daily Post blog.

Growth

It’s been a cold start to the new year here in Northumberland, but there are signs that whilst spring may not be just around the corner, it is certainly on the horizon. We’re starting to see the green points of snowdrops pushing up through the soil, and through last year’s leaf litter. It’s our first … Continue reading Growth

Temporary: Black Headed Gulls

I spotted these black headed gulls perched on the railings of the footbridge in Rothbury yesterday afternoon. I was only able to get a couple of shots of them before a pedestrian crossed the bridge, and they scattered. Temporary indeed! For any doubters out there, the black (or more accurately, dark chocolate brown) head that … Continue reading Temporary: Black Headed Gulls

Peek: The Hand of St Paulinus

Take a peek at the detailled carving on the statue of St Paulinus at The Lady's Well, near Holystone, Northumberland. Now cared for by the National Trust, the legend is that St Ninian used the shallow pool on the site to baptise early Christians. It's a beautiful, tranquil, and atmospheric place, set in a grove … Continue reading Peek: The Hand of St Paulinus

Rounded: Hawthorn Berries

October is finishing on a grey, cold, overcast note. Thank goodness for the odd explosion of colour in the hedgerow. "Rounded" is the theme for this week's WordPress photo challenge. You can see more rounded pictures over on The Daily Post blog.

Glow: Brinkburn Priory

Low autumn sunlight falls through the windows of the manor house at Brinkburn Priory, giving the stonework a warm, mellow glow. We've been meaning to visit Brinkburn Priory for a while now, and finally made it last weekend, just before it closed for the winter. It's a beautiful, peaceful site, and in a week of … Continue reading Glow: Brinkburn Priory
