Just a Card

Today I'm giving a big shout out to the Just a Card campaign, a not-for-profit organisation who aim to encourage people to support, value, and buy from, artists, makers, designers, and independent shops. Their message is that every purchase, no matter how small, even "just a card," can make a huge difference to a small … Continue reading Just a Card

Tea (or coffee) Break

The theme for the May Instagram challenge that I’m still managing to keep up with is Tea Break. Now, there is a topic that is close to my heart. There’s nothing I like better than a trip out, and some tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Obviously, tea-drinking and cake-eating excursions have been … Continue reading Tea (or coffee) Break

December Landscape: Winter Light

For me, December has been a month of short days, beautiful low afternoon light, and spectacular sunsets. I find the days of late autumn can be quite gloomy and oppressive, especially here in the north of England, where it starts to go dark in early afternoon on overcast days. This year, however, we’ve been lucky … Continue reading December Landscape: Winter Light

Silver Birch

I found one particular beach that was awash with sea glass … Continue reading Found Treasures

Snowed In

Well, that’ll teach me to talk about signs of spring. Since my last post, it has snowed every day. Sometimes all day. Our village, indeed the whole of Upper Coquetdale, is now pretty much cut off from the outside world. Roads are closed across the county, including the A1, the main north/south road. Luckily we … Continue reading Snowed In

Project Tree: January

A Lens In The Landscape is starting a new photography project, documenting an oak tree near our house through the year. This is the first post.

“Winter dawn is the color of metal,
The trees stiffen into place like burnt nerves.”
Sylvia Plath, Waking in Winter

I am starting a photography project this month, documenting one tree through a calendar year.

It’s a very handsome oak tree in a field outside of the village where I live. This month has seen many changes, particularly with the recent snowfall and the ever changing light.
